I normally write pretty cynical or funny songs, that’s my shtick.
"The stupid man’s Randy Newman" is a great description of what I do when performing solo.
Once in a blue moon, I’ll write something direct and emotional like the Bigfellas song "Wish You Knew".
That’s usually the exception more than the rule.
But here’s another one in that vein, "Lifeboat."
LITC Song without a Home
I wrote this one with my buddy Spud Davenport on our continual collaborative side project, Leaders In The Clubhouse.
When we were putting together our album One, it was in that batch of songs.
But it never quite fit into our ethos of "fun rock" so we never finished recording it for Leaders.
Meanwhile, we tried recording it straight with a couple of different singers, in different keys, in slightly different tempos and never felt like we quite nailed it.
It was always something we wanted to get into film & TV placement and feature us as songwriters, not as artists or singers.
It never quite happened, so we have this pretty little song sitting around here.
Every Once in a While
I play it solo sometimes, to varying degrees of success.
At bars and coffee shops, it gets polite applause.
Yet, the couple of times I’ve played it to a rapt audience at a house concert, it was a showstopper.
Go figure.
I guess I still don’t understand audiences.
There’s a live recording of it here from my goofy live record of songs and shows from Genghis Cohen in Hollywood (R.I.P. to that venue).
Video
I also want to post this video, done in Nashville at Bobby's Idle Hour Tavern.
Sometimes I just write a simple post here to remind you all of a certain song or just an excuse to post a video.
In this case, it’s a little something to do for a song that I never really quite knew what to do with.
